Nurses To Strike San Leandro Hospital May 1

California Nurses Association to hold a one-day walkout here and at other Sutter Health facilities throughout the region.

As rumors swirl of coming layoffs and big changes at San Leandro Hospital, the union representing local nurses said Friday that it will hold a one-day walkout here on May 1st that will also affect other medical centers controlled by Sutter Health.

The California Nurses Association (CNA) has been at odds with Sutter over pay, staffing levels, patient care and other issues, and last September and December.

The coming walkout coincides with concerns that Sutter is getting ready to issue layoff notices as it prepares to close San Leandro Hospital's emergency room and transform that facility into a rehabilitation center.

CNA said that 4,500 nurses would be affected by the planned walkout which is also scheduled to occur at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center facilities in Berkeley and Oakland; Mills-Peninsula Health Services hospitals in Burlingame and San Mateo; Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley; Sutter Delta in Antioch; Sutter Solano in Vallejo; Novato Community Hospital; and Sutter Lakeside.
