While unemployment was up in the Bay Area, it decreased overall for California in January, according to the EDD.

Jobless numbers statewide fell from 12.5 percent in December to 12.4 percent in January, the department's report said.

More than 12,500 non-agricultural jobs were added since December across the state, for a January total of 13,971,200 such jobs in California, according to the EDD.

The unemployment rate is based on a federal survey of 5,500 California households and does not include agricultural jobs, which are handled by another department.
