Frugal Family: Deals for Teens

Check out free and inexpensive classes, activities and events for teens.

This week’s Frugal Family focuses on free and inexpensive teen activities. 


  • Deal: Get a ticket for , scheduled for June 25 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., and take advantage of the gaming equipment at the library. Teens will be able to hang out with friends while playing Wii, Xbox 360, PS2 and Kinect games. Tickets are free and refreshments will be served.
  • The Fine Print: Tickets will be available two weeks before the event.
  • Extra, Extra: Check out other teen-friendly activities at the library.
  • Good through: Event scheduled for June 25, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.


  • Deal: Attend a and international treat tasting on June 23 from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The free event is intended for teens in sixth through 12th grade.
  • The Fine Print: No registration necessary.
  • Extra, Extra: Learn about the summer reading program and other special events for teens.
  • Good through: Book swap is scheduled for June 23.


  • Deal: Stop in for some crafting on Sunday, May 22, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. For ages 14 and older. Participants will learn the basics of working with clay and will create a project to take home. The cost of the class is $25.
  • The Fine Print:  Advance registration is required. Jazzy Crafts is in Castro Valley.
  • Extra, Extra: Check out other teen-friendly classes like “Man Card” Stencil Cards on Wednesday, May 25, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., ages 14 and older.
  • Good Through: Dates and times listed above.


  • Deal: Teens can sign up to be library volunteers over the summer, adding to their resumes and giving back to the community. Orientations are available at the and the on May 21, 24 and 28.
  • The Fine Print: Students going into grades 9 through 12 are welcome to attend orientation days.
  • Extra, Extra: Learn more about the Summer Reading Program volunteers will be assisting with.
  • Good Through: Dates listed above.


  • Deal: The Conservatory of Classical Ballet, 1035 Macarthur Blvd., offers for teens and adults weekly on Tuesdays from 7:15 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. The cost is $13 per class.
  • The Fine Print: Classes are available at the dates and times listed above.
  • Extra, Extra: Ask how you can purchase a monthly class card.
  • Good through: Weekly on Tuesdays.
