Best Electronic Gifts for the 2012 Holiday Season

Tablets, flip-screen laptops and smart TV devices are among the popular choices this year.

Looking for the perfect holiday gift for the electronic gadget-lover in your life? It can be challenging to keep up with the latest devices in the fast-changing world of technology.

The nonprofit Business and Professional Microcomputer Users Group Inc. (BPMUG) is ready to help. At its recent monthly meeting (in Massachusetts) the computer users group sponsored a demonstration by Staples Easy Tech Field Manager John Yearsley at which he presented a sampling of what’s new and improved in the world of technology. We've added a few of our own picks as well.

LAPTOPS

Lenovo Yoga or Lenovo Thinkpad Twist are new touch-screen laptops with flipscreens that twist and turn into tablets.

The Apple MacBook Air is a new super-thin, super-light laptop. Apple’s other popular laptop is the well-known Apple MacBook Pro.

Chrome Books are laptops running Google’s ChromeOS. This is a good choice for a “second computer,” said Yearsley. They are particularly useful for Internet and email use. The Samsung 13” Series 5 is a popular choice.

TABLETS

Tablets may be the most popular gifts this year. Amazon has rolled out the Kindle Fire HD, which is highly rated and a top seller this year. Yearsley said he covets the Google “Nexus” line of Android tablets — available with a seven- or 10-inch screen. Apple has new iPads—the iPad with Retina Display and the iPad Mini.

E-READERS

For those who simply want to read electronic books, an e-reader may be the best choice. The new Kindle Paperwhite, from Amazon, is a top seller. For those who prefer a keyboard over a touch screen, there is the Kindle Keyboard. Other e-readers include the Nook Simple Touch Reader, from Barnes & Noble, and the pricier Sony PRS-T2 Reader.

HOT GADGETS

For those looking to upgrade their HD TV to a “smart TV” (to access the Internet or stream video such as Netflix), there are devices that can help. Some examples are NeoTVmax, Google TV, Roku and Boxxee Box. Gaming devices such as the Xbox and the Wii also have this option.

Watch what is going on in your home with the D-link wireless camera, a device that connects with your home wireless network and lets you view the live video and record from anywhere.

Meet The Nest Learning Thermostat,” which is a device to replace a thermostat. It “learns” what temperatures you like throughout the day and creates a custom schedule for your home. It can be adjusted from anywhere via Wi-Fi.

Brookstone’s wireless headphones for the TV or computer make a great gift.

The Logitech Bluetooth Wireless Speaker enables you to play music from your tablet, cellphone or computer. It’s easy to move throughout your house or to take on the road or to parties.

Microsoft has introduced the Wedge Touch Mouse. Optimized for Windows 8 navigation, it has wireless Bluetooth connectivity and has a sleek and compact design.

There are no battery hassles with the Wireless Solar Keyboard, made for both Mac and PC. It runs off warm light and can be a companion device for a tablet.

STOCKING STUFFERS

USB hubs: Run out of USB ports on your computer? There are USB hubs with multiple ports that come in cute shapes.

Thumb drives/flash drives: Many of these are offered in fun designs like a car with headlights, Angry Bird figures or charm bracelets and many more.

Hi Christa...I'm the guy in the story that Anthony posted the link for, and I keep bees in SanRead More Leandro. There are several beekeepers in town, and bees will fly up to 3 miles to collect pollen and nectar, but I don't know if there are any beekeepers near you. If the city council approves the keeping of bees in city limits, then it's likely that someone will get bees closer to you, but you don't need to have a hive right on your property.

I'm happy to report Buster found a forever home on Mother's Day. There are other bassets availableRead More for adoption on Golden Gate Basset Rescue's website, however. I would speculate that more durable, reusable bags still score a lot better than disposables, evenRead More if a small fraction of those are "dual use" as in the cases you point out (dog poop, trash can liner). BTW, for those concerned about a dwindling supply of free poop bags as a result of the ban, here are still plenty of plastic bags available for that purpose e.g. those that people's newspaper comes in. The bottom line is that most people would agree that reusable bags are the better solution than to continue choking our waterways with disposable plastic bags.
David January 21, 2013 at 10:12 pm
There are plenty of competing studies that disagree. I perused that, and one huge faulty assumptionRead More that they have is that "single use" means single use when as we see above, people use them for dogs, garbage etc.
Stefanie Pruegel January 21, 2013 at 09:47 pm
Funny you should bring up cost/benefit analysis of disposable plastic bags vs reusable bags, David.Read More This is exactly what was done in 2010 by a coalition of several California cities and organizations, to help communities in the state gauge the impact of any ordinance they consider passing in regards to disposable bags. The upshot is that reusable bags (particularly non-woven plastic reusable bags) have significantly lower environmental impacts on a per-use basis than single-use plastic bags. Just had a chance to read this story. Loved it! While I believe that conscientious students wouldRead More try their best at the test, as I did when I took state aptitude tests in school, I can hardly imagine staying up nights worrying about it! There is nothing at stake except perhaps personal satisfaction so the test itself shouldn't impose stress. A high-strung parent, on the other hand, might.
David April 27, 2013 at 03:09 pm
Oh come on, Rob. You talk about me cherry picking stuff? 10/10? Sure. And as I've shown you canRead More pull out Maxwell Park, North Oakland, parts of SF (Glen Park, for example), parts of El Cerrito and other locations to show that API scores aren't well-correlated with property values. Again, why do homes sell for the same $/sq foot in Maxwell Park as Estudillo Estates? San Lorenzo's API is about the same or better than most of SLUSD. Property values there are lower. The clearest example of what effect API scores have on property values was mentioned below, about a 10% difference depending on which side of the tracks, er, 580 you live on in Castro Valley. 10%? whoopdedo, that kind of variation is washed out when you factor in commute times, crime, amenities, etc. In fact, API scores are likely to continue to shrink as a factor in RE values as more and more parents flee the public schools, no matter what the API (witness SLUSD, the 30% drop in OUSD enrollment in just the past decade, etc). In another generation, we'll be accused by our children of child abuse by having sent them to public schools.
Rob Rich April 27, 2013 at 12:38 pm
If you accept the premise that API scores are poorly correlated with real estate vualues, then is itRead More coincidental that the top school districts are in areas with high real estate values? http://www.greatschools.org/find-a-school/7046-ten-california-school-districts-highest-test-scores-2012.gs. In the old days, 10 for 10 was considered pretty good correlation.
