USS Hornet Memorial Day Tribute to Veterans

The ceremony aboard the floating museum begins at 1 p.m. Monday, May 28.

 

A Memorial Day tribute honoring veterans past and present will take place onboard the aircraft carrier USS Hornet beginning at 1 p.m. Monday, May 28. The USS Hornet is one of the most decorated ships of the U.S. Navy. It is berthed at 707 W. Hornet Ave., Pier 3, in Alameda.

Tours of the ship will be available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $15 for adults, $12 with military I.D., and $6 for kids.

The day’s events will include an invocation by retired U.S. Navy Cmdr. Chaplain John Berger followed by a keynote speech by CDR James Ridgway, Commanding Officer Naval Operational Support Center in Alameda.

There will also be performances by The Hornet Band, The Young American Patriots Fife & Drum Corps, and a presentation of Colors by the Boy Scouts of America beginning at 11 a.m.

“This is the 12th year we have held this special ceremony onboard the Hornet, and it is our privilege and honor to do so,” said USS Hornet CEO and U.S. Navy Capt. Randall Ramian, Supply Corps (Naval Reserve).

Before and after the ceremony, visitors are invited to explore the many decks of the ship from the Captain’s Bridge to Engine Room. Exhibits include 13 Navy and Marine aircraft, ranging from WWII vintage to modern era, and the West Coast’s largest Apollo Moon Mission display. Families can experience naval history and space exploration firsthand with authentic aircraft, Apollo exhibit and flight simulator.
