Updated 2:20 p.m.

Garfield Elementary School was put on lockdown this morning after a few students reportedly saw a woman outside the school carrying a firearm, according to San Leandro Police.

A few students went to school faculty and mentioned they saw a women carrying a gun in front of the school according to San Leandro Police Department's Lt. Rick DeCosta.

Police were called around 10:30 a.m. after faculty was unable to find the woman at the front of the school, DeCosta said. Police then met with the principal and superintendent and put the school on lockdown as a safety precaution, DeCosta said.

SLPD searched each classroom on campus to make sure no one was there that matched the description of the woman, according to DeCosta. He said police advised to lift the lockdown at 11:10 a.m.

A parent notified San Leandro Patch that she received a robocall earlier today notifying parents about the lockdown. She said she received the call just before noon.
