Multimedia Students Break Fast on Cesar Chavez Day

The Season of Service ended Thursday on Cesar Chavez's birthday. It was also the final day in the Fast for Nonviolence carried out by the San Leandro Academy for Multimedia.

After 28 days of fasting and media that provoked conversations and sometimes arguments on campus and in our city, the final day of the Fast for Nonviolence is here. The San Leandro Academy for Multimedia hopes that it honored Cesar Chavez's fast and nonviolent struggle for justice.

Thursday, we broke our fast with a potluck meal after school, and our students were honored at an assembly.

We are grateful to Patch for giving us a place where San Leandro can see our work. We hope you enjoyed the videos, but most of all we hope that you have thought about accepting the differences in the people around you.

We end today with our final piece about spreading words of love and encouragement wherever you go and whoever you come across. Taking the simple step to say something nice can change the world, or at least your world, for the better.

San Leandro High School community, I am so blown away by the SLHS community's 10 week Season of Service classroom interaction and reflection on non-violence. Thank you for sharing your actions, projects, and especially your amazing videos by San Leandro Academy for Media (SLAM). This has been an amazing outreach effort and I am confident that I speak for many when I say it has been an enormous pleasure and privilege to be able to become more familiar with your community and learn from you through this social networking medium. I encourage you to continue to show all the good that you do and share your profound courage and vision in the promotion of non-violence in our world. In gratitude.

The work of Cesar Chavez is hardly done. "La Via Campesina" is the international movement which brings together millions of peasants, small and medium-size farmers, landless people, women farmers, indigenous people, migrants and agricultural workers from around the world. It defends small-scale sustainable agriculture as a way to promote social justice and dignity. It strongly opposes corporate driven agriculture and transnational companies that are destroying people and nature. Join the action! 8 March: International Women Day La Via Campesina joins women movements and social movements from around the world to demand equal rights for women. 17 April: International Day of Peasant's struggle Hundreds of direct actions, cultural activities, conferences, film screenings, community debates and rallies are organized by a wide variety of groups, communities or organizations. 10 September: International Struggle Day against the WTO Commemoration of the sacrifice of Mr. Lee Kun Hae, a Korean farmer who stabbed himself to death during a mass protest against the WTO in Cancun, Mexico in 2003. He was holding a banner saying “WTO Kills Farmers”

“Nonviolence is not inaction. It is not discussion. It is not for the timid or weak... Nonviolence is hard work. It is the willingness to sacrifice. It is the patience to win.” - Cesar Chavez
