About the artists-

Marion Coleman 

Marion Coleman creates work that addresses family, history, nature, cultural traditions and social themes. These pieces utilize color and figurative imagery to educate, entertain, inspire and stimulate ideas and discussion.

 

Coleman’s work has been exhibited in the United States and internationally. She has numerous private commissions and has completed public art commissions for Alameda County Juvenile Justice Center, San Leandro, CA, Castro Valley Library, Castro Valley, CA and the Richmond, CA Civic Center. 

 

Her work has been presented in several quilt publications including 500 Art Quilts, Textile Forum, Art Quilting Studio, American Craft, Quilting Arts Magazine, Alter Couture, Creative Quilting, a book on journal quilting and Textural Rhythms: Quilts in the Jazz Tradition, a book and touring quilt exhibition that opened in January 2011 at the Museum of the African Diaspora in San Francisco, CA. 

 

She has served on the board of the African American Quilt Guild of Oakland, the African Advisory Council of the Oakland Museum and the board of the Textile Arts Council of The de Young Museum.

 

 

Patricia A. Montgomery 

Patricia A. Montgomery has a career spanning over 20 years with solo shows, installations, public art and many commissions around the United States and Internationally, Has work in many private and public collections.

 

Montgomery has taught quilting both here and abroad and has been the recipient of many prestigious awards and honors such as Alliance for California Traditional Art’s Apprenticeship Program 2011 Master Artist Helen Anderson, Apprentice working together in the traditional art form of African American Quilting; 3D Group Award – Syncopation IV – 2008 Juried All-Media Exhibition - Palos Verdes Art Center, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA.  Montgomery was selected for the Illuminations 2007 Calendar - Mixed Media Fiber Collage titled “Sometime You Just Have to Play in a Red World” featured for the month of November - Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center - Boston, MA; 

 

Collaborated with Daniel Galvaz on the Mural Project – “A Journey of Promise” for the African-American Museum and Library, - City of Oakland’s Public Art Program – Oakland, CA -

Montgomery is Historian for the African American Quilt Guild of Oakland, CA
