This the first of two benefit performances by San Leandro performing artist and media personality Brian Copeland of his "Not A Genuine Black Man" one man show, telling of his early years in San Leandro as part of the only black family in San Leandro's Washington Manor area in the early 1970's. The second performance will be the next day, Saturday, January 22, and both will beging at 8:00 PM at California Conservatory Theatre, 999 East 14th St. in the San Leandro Civic Center. The shows will benefit California Conservatory Theatre and the San Leandro Historical Society as co-sponsors of the event. There will be a reception following the show, with an opportuniy to meet Brian and purchase copies of his book of the same title signed by the author. Ticket price is $50 and tickets may be obtained by contacting California Conservatory Theatre at cctofsl@yahoo.com or 510 632 8850. His show ran for almost 2 years at the Marsh Theater in San Francisco and has been performed in other venues across the country. It is both poignant and humorous, and is "required viewing" for anyone seeking to understand the history and present nature of the San Leandro community.
