SL Schools look to Raise Taxes Higher Than Voters OK'd

The San Leandro school board will vote tonight whether to approve a new board policy – one, which outlines a plan to tax residents a flat $39 per "parcel of taxable real property" every year under Measure L.

The Contra Costa Times reports that this meets the state's legal requirement for special taxes to be uniform, however, writes this is not what district voters approved last November; additionally, the flat rate would increase taxes for residential owners in complexes with five or more units.

Under state law, taxes can’t be collected if they are above the rate that voters approved. The original measure taxed them $19 per unit.
