San Leandro Reads 2013 Focuses on Foodie Fun

The library offers an array of foodie-related events from now until September.

From the City of San Leandro

The San Leandro Public Library presents “San Leandro Reads 2013 - Foodie Fun All Summer Long!”

Adults 18 and over are invited to participate by reading the book Animal, Vegetable, Miracle which is about what happens when best-selling author Barbara Kingsolver and her family vow for a year to only buy food that is grown locally. If it's not local, then they must learn to live without it.

Foodie Fun also features great events, such as the Home Brewing Workshop, offered in collaboration with the Millennial Academy, on Saturday, July 20, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Main Library where adults 21 and over can learn about home brewing beer from BrewMaster of San Leandro and snack on some pub grub. Participants in this event must be 21 or over.

The workshop is free, space is limited, and registration is required. To register, present a valid ID at the San Leandro Main Library Information Desk, 300 Estudillo Avenue.

The Foodie Fun continues at the Main Library on Thursday, August 15 at 6 p.m. with the screening of free movie about a frustrated insurance worker who decides to cook her way through Julia Child’s classic cookbook Mastering the Art of French Cooking and blog about her experience. No tickets or registration are required.

The Foodie Fun fantastic final event is a tour of Novella Carpenter’s Ghost Town Farm in Oakland on Saturday, September 28 at 10 a.m. Novella wrote about the Ghost Town Farm in her best-selling memoir  Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer.

After the tour, the fun continues at the Eat Real Festival at Jack London Square. There participants get to sample food from over 100 food vendors (with no dish priced over $5), enjoy 5 live bands, and participate in workshops, contests, and much more. The trip fee is $20 per person which includes transportation, tour fees, and a copy of the book.

Space is very limited, so come to the Main Library soon to book a seat on the bus.

Discounted copies of Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: a Year of Food Life  are available for purchase at the Main Library for only $5.
