"Thunderstorms with small hail are possible over the weekend," according to the forecast, which added that "rain could be heavy at times and lead to poor driving conditions."

Already the storms were having an effect.

The San Jose Mercury reported that two cars collided on Interstate 580 near Benedict Drive in San Leandro, only one of several accidents Tuesday.

Arriving and departing flights at San Francisco International Airport were experiencing delays, but officials at Oakland International Airport and Mineta San Jose International Airport said most planes were on schedule.
