'Food For Fines' at the San Leandro Library

Donate a can of food and reduce your overdue fines.

From the City of San Leandro

For one in six people in Alameda County, hunger is a reality.

This summer, the San Leandro Library will join other libraries across California in collecting 10,000 pounds of food for those in need.

To kickoff our summer food drive, the San Leandro Public Library will offer Food For Fines from Monday, June 3 through Saturday, June 8.

During that time, library card holders can bring a non-perishable food item and your overdue book to the Main Library or our three branches, Manor, Mulford-Marina or South Branch Library, and we’ll take $1 off your overdue fines, for up to $5 total ($1 per can).

Food will be donated to the Davis Street Family Resource Center. The Davis Street Family Resource Center serves over 1,000 households and about 3,000 individuals each month, and your donations of non-perishable food items like peanut butter, canned tuna and meat, beans, lowsodium soups and stews are vital. Only non-perishable, unexpired, store-sealed items will be accepted. No glass, please.

The Food For Fines program will run from June 3 through June 8 at the following San Leandro Library locations:

  • San Leandro Main Library, 300 Estudillo Ave. 510-577-3970
  • Mulford-Marina Branch Library, 13699 Aurora Drive 510-577-7976
  • South Branch Library, 14799 E. 14th Street 510-577-7980
  • Manor Branch Library, 1241 Manor Blvd 510-577-7970
Please call for open hours or check our website at  www.sanleandrolibrary.org. Food donation barrels will remain at the Library all summer long, even after the Food For Fines program ends on June 8, and patrons are encouraged to continue donating all summer long. Every can counts!
