Breastfeeding: When To Wean Asks Time Magazine

A cover story in the national magazine popularizes a private issue. What do you think? Vote in a Patch poll.

Before we had kids, my BFF and I once saw a child approach his mother in a Burlingame boutique, pull her shirt up and nurse right there on the spot.

On another outing, in San Francisco's Metreon arcade of all places, we watched a kid probably age four, sprawled out sideways on mom's lap enjoying the milky goods.

We agreed at the time that once a kid could wear shoes, it was too late to nurse.

Which makes the hubbub about the Time magazine cover rather amusing. It shows a toddler, standing on a chair to nurse.

Is there anything really new about that? Kids who can wear shoes nurse, yeah. Some mommies do it longer than others.

I'll have to say after having two kids, my previously uninformed views shifted quite a bit. I could understand, a little bit, why it's hard to cut off the kid.

I loved nursing my babies. After the pain faded (yeah, no one mentions that it really hurts — at first), it became absolutely awesome.

No bottles to wash, wonderful for bonding, completely portable and sooo healthy.

My aforementioned BFF had a preemie and got a little cheated on the BF action because arriving at 25 weeks he couldn't manage even that. But she was a breast pump champ, milking out gallons of the stuff for her little 2-pounder who's now a healthy 10-year-old starting pitcher on his baseball team.

I cut my daughter off at 16 months, because, yes, teeth hurt. And yes, when they can ask for it, I'm a little bit done. Plus, I wanted to have a second one.

With my son, I take pride in knowing that my breastmilk might have helped saved his life, as he was severely ill a week after birth. His doc. called my milk "gold." But how quickly they forget! At four months old he had better things to do. I was back to work, and he was more interested in checking out what his big sis was doing.

So what do you think? How did you handle your babies? Did they self-wean or did you cut them off yourself?

I don't want it to fail, but it shall, for the reasons I've laid out. Just like the public schools.Read More Indeed, as pointed out numerous times, there are ways for the public schools to be successful. These avenues to success are either actively thwarted by committed, dedicated people (like teachers' unions) or actively ignored (by those, like you, who feel that you can still "fix" a system that is structured incorrectly from top to bottom).

Also, you're addressing a "problem" with this housing project that *does not exist* as IRead More have pointed out repeatedly with real data--there is ample "affordable housing" in SL, and there is even more in directly adjacent (even on mass transit routes) areas like Hayward and Oakland. Typically when "fixing" a non-existent problem, you end up converting whatever fictional problem you're addressing into a real problem of a different variety. This is amply reviewed by the maxim: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." In the meantime, other people are working very hard to address *real* problems indeed, not those of their fevered imaginations.

There's a problem all right. Decent, safe, affordable housing is hard for low income folks to find.Read More I'm not making this stuff up. While you're busy being a critic, others are out there working to solve real problems. Heck, there was a celebration honoring Congregations of Women Religious last Friday. Too bad you missed it, it might have opened your eyes. Those Sisters Rock! They have helped create over 40,000 units of affordable housing.

What brand is the pastry cutter?
Rowena Peñalba June 18, 2013 at 11:27 pm
It's slightly used but I don't remember where I bought it from. I don't see any brand name on it. IRead More just priced it based on the lowest one available on Amazon. If you're interested, make me an offer. Maybe we can agree on it. Thanks for your inquiry.

Leah, do you have the authorization from Disney for the use of the copyrighted Dumbo character youRead More use for your blog? I thought that the policy of Patch was to deny access to non-authorized materials such as this.
Leah Hall June 2, 2013 at 08:12 pm
Nope.
