Big Read At Manor Library: 'Their Eyes Were Watching God'

Depression-era novel has found a resurgence of interest.

Come to the Manor Branch Library for the Big Read kickoff on Tuesday, February 5, at 6:30 pm.

The Big Read novel is "Their Eyes Were Watching God" by Zora Neale Hurston, which came out in 1937 but went largely unappreciated for decades.

In 2005 it was made into a TV drama starring actress Halle Berry.

The Manor kickoff features storyteller Muriel Johnson who will enthrall listeners with songs and folktales from various parts of the African continent.

At the conclusion of the program, all adults are invited to register for a book discussion group and receive a free copy of Hurston's novel (while supplies last). Refreshments served. The program is free and no registration is required.

The San Leandro Public Library is a three-time recipient of a Big Read grant from the National Endowment for the Arts!

The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest.

The goal of The Big Read, the largest reading program in the U.S., is to bring together partners across the country to encourage reading for pleasure and enlightenment. The program seeks to restore reading to the center of American culture.
