Alameda Leaders Say Crime Will Increase with New Restaurant

San Leandro Police Chief says he doesn't see same in his city

Plans to build a new In-N-Out Burger near the Webster Tube in Alameda have city leaders and hundreds of residents voicing their opposition to the restaurant – citing it will attract crime, increase traffic and produce other problems for the area.

The Alamedan reports that even District Attorney Nancy O’Malley voiced her concerns at a recent Planning Board meeting.

“We have people coming to what can be considered a vulnerable site in Alameda,” O’Malley said. “It’s easy in and easy out, no pun intended, with the Alameda tube.”

However, Acting Police Chief Paul Rolleri reportedly feels different.

“There’s no absolutes (sic). We won’t know for sure until it’s in there,” Rolleri told the Alamedan.

The In-N-Out is part of the Alameda Landing development that includes a Target-anchored shopping center under construction and 276 planned new homes.

Despite concerns from Alameda residents, police in four East Bay cities that are home to In-N-Out Burger, including San Leandro, said the restaurant hasn’t been a bigger problem than similar businesses. All four are near major freeways.

San Leandro Police Lt. Randy Brandt said the In-N-Out in his city has not generated many police calls.

“The correlation between In-N-Out and crime would be really hard for us to figure out,” he told the Alamedan. “I haven’t heard any negative stuff at all.”
