"We could never afford to do this," said K-9 program supervisor Sgt. J Nguyen-Delgado.  "It really gives it a lot of meaning that it's truly a partnership" between police and the community.

As a thank you to the association the police department brought out the K-9s that will be using the kennels and showed just how they do their jobs.

Three exercises were exhibited at the event which was held at .

The first showed how the officers are able to stop the dogs after giving the order to pursue a subject.

"They're different than this," Officer Walt Aldred said, pointing to his firearrm "Because once you pull the trigger you can't call the bullet back."

K-9 handlers also demonstrated how the dogs find hidden suspects and search for drugs.

After the demonstrations neighbors were able to pet the dogs and see the inside of a K-9 cruiser as well as K-9 bulletproof vests.

"The main message here is we talk to our police. We love our police. And we call our police! so take your crime elsewhere." Broadmoor Neighborhood Association Vice-president Carol Kennedy said.
