Police Investigate Gang Angle In Shooting of Teen on Marina Boulevard

It's still unclear why an 18-year-old Hayward male was shot and wounded on Marina Boulevard.

San Leandro police are investigating whether there is a gang connection to a shooting that occurred Friday on the 2100 block of Marina Boulevard, leaving an 18-year-old Hayward man with a bullet hole in his right hand.

According to a press release, police received a call Friday evening from St. Rose Hospital in Hayward regarding a gunshot victim.

The officer who visited the hospital interviewed the 18-year-old victim, whose identity was not released.

The victim said he and two other males were were standing on the 2100 block of Marina Boulevard when they heard several gun shots. 

The victim said he ducked down and was shot in the right hand. The bullet passed through the hand, police said.

One of the two men who had been with the victim at the time of the shooting was also at the hospital when police arrived.

The victim and his friend did not provide any description of a suspect nor any motive for the shooting. 

Furthermore, neither would reveal the identity of a third person with them at the time. So far investigators have been unable to locate or contact this third involved party. 

"We have limited information and an apparent lack of willingness by the involved parties to provide us the information we need to solve this case," said police department spokesman Lt. Jeff Tudor.

Tudor said investigators are looking into the incident to determine whether it was gang related.  

Tudor said the police don't have any reason to believe that the shooting is related to a separate report of at the Marina Square Shopping Center.

Police believe that gang activity has in San Leandro in recent years.
